How to fix Photoshop CS4 crashes while using type tool

I had few questions about the Photoshop CS4 crashing while using the type tool.

While there are various articles about it on the net pointing to removal either of “Adobe Photoshop X64 CS4 Prefs.psp” file (in C > Users > [User] > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop CS4 > Adobe Photoshop CS4 Settings) or various font suites – the simple true is that just disabling of “Font Preview Size” will do the trick of fixing extremely annoying issue if Photoshop crashing.

So how to fix it?

  1. Open the Photoshop CS4
  2. Navigate “Edit > Preferences > Type”
  3. Uncheck “Font Preview Size” and click “OK”

edit PS CS4 preferences

That’s all - your Photoshop will run without crashing.

There is thou still question of why this happen on the first place?

Without going into technical details – you have probably downloaded some of the fonts which cause the crashing. Now, it’s good idea to move the fonts from font folder on some temp folder and move them back until you figure out which font(s) are actually problematic.

This is really simple operation, but it might be time consuming if you have a lot of fonts; so to make it quicker – copy back fonts in bunches – it should take you just few minutes; this will help you also to reduce the number of active fonts. Good luck.
